When we reached Somerset 313, I just felt lost and had no sense of direction. In a short few months since I last went to Somerset MRT, it just looks so different now. Overwhelmed that an exit of an MRT station just literally opened up to a shopping complex. Wow... Way better than the unstrategically located LRTs in Malaysia.
We were going up and up and up and up, searching for food. I was too hungry to think up a game plan anyway. Was heading towards Food Republic which was on the 5th floor while Dear caught a glimpse of an eating area which was quite cheery and bright. A glance at the menu and we were attracted by the beautiful pictures of the fusion food offered by Say Cheeze.
We were there at around 2 plus on a Sunday afternoon and the place was quite empty. Not a very good sign coming to think about it. We cozied up together in a corner of the restaurant while waiting to be served.
When I saw the name Say Cheese, I expected cheese to be the main ingredient of the food. Only after really browsing through the menu, did I realise that the cheese in the name here actually represents the restaurant's cheesecakes.
I had a hard time choosing what to eat. I finally decided on Tokyo Pizza, while Dear decided on a Ravioli dish. I was taken in by the picture of the Crispy Man Tou so I ordered that as well. I just have a serious 'thing' for Man Tou. We decided to share 6 Sampler Slice, which describes 6 different types of cheesecakes which we would be able to try.
After making the order, I waited patiently for the food. I was too hungry to even consider snapping a few shots of the restaurant and its environment.
The first to arrive was the Cripsy Man Tou (S$8.90).
I was taken aback by how small the Man Tous were. For a plate of 4 Man Tous with a price tag of S$8.90, I had expected bigger Man Tous at least. I was disappointed that its name is Cripsy Man Tou, but it was far from crispy. It was ok, but I think that if it was really crispy, that would have made it a lot better. The chili crab sauce which accompanied the Man Tous wasn't all that bad. Overall, I was disappointed as this dish wasn't able to fulfill my desire and need for good tasting deep fried Man Tou which is fried to a golden crispiness on the outside, while still fluffy inside.
Next was Dear's Ravioli (S$12.90). I'm not sure what is it's full name but Dear ate into it with gusto. Guess he was hungry too, although he didn't nag and made a big fuss about it as I was doing.
Next was Tokyo pizza (S$13.90), which is actually teriyaki chicken, mayonnaise, seaweed and bonito flakes on a pizza crust.
After such a filling meal, especially with the huge portion of pizza, it was time for dessert.
Desserts are my kind of food. It leaves me feeling happy, glad and giddy with the taste of something sweet. I have a very sweet tooth. Dear thinks I eat too much sugar. He has been nagging me to cut down on my sugar intake but it's hard. Girls need their sweets.
6 Sampler Slice (S$13.90)
I didn't expect the cheesecakes to be so small. Of course it's written mini cheesecakes, but if we put all 6 of them together, it wouldn't be able to become 2 full slices of normal cheesecakes, as we are paying the equivalent of 2 slices of normal cheesecakes. I was horrified by my choice and I was wondering whether was Dear's initial choice a better one. Dear wasn't one to complain, thus we started digging in.
There was 6 different types of mini cheesecakes.
1. Original cheesecake: This reminds me of Secret Recipe's New York cheesecake without the base. It also reminds me of my mum's cheesecake, which makes me miss my mum and home as well.
2. White chocolate raspberry cheesecake. I felt that it was too sour due to the raspberry. With the parts where there were raspberries, it was a bit too sour while the other parts, it just tasted like the original cheesecake.
3. Oreo cheesecake: It just tasted like oreo biscuit. It was too strong that even the smell of the cheese was covered by it.
4. The chocolate cheesecake right at the back of the picture above. Not my type of cake. It was too bitter for my liking. Not sweet enough for me. It's chocolate smell was very strong, that it was more like dark chocolate.
5. Chocolate Treblo: This tasted great! I loved how they managed to complement the different parts of the cake with each other. Very tasty!
6. Rum raisin cheesecake: Dear found the taste of raisin not suited to go with cheesecake. I'm not someone who often eats rum raisin, so it was different.
Overall, I liked the environment and the fact that it wasn't too crowded. I find it hard to locate places to eat which serves average/good food which is not too crowded. It's a nice place to lean back and just relax while people watching. There were lots of people bustling around shopping at Somerset 313.
Will I be back? Well, I think that I would pass on this first and proceed to find other places with better food and a cheaper price tag. I would come back here if I happen to be at 313 again. Not a place I would purposely visit though.
Total damage to pocket: S$58.35 (ouch on the service charge!) for two.
